A veneer is like a covering for a tooth, made from a very thin layer of porcelain material, and fits over the surface a tooth much like a false nail on your hands. Veneers can also be made from a naturally coloured “composite” material.
Veneers are especially effective in improving the appearance of gaps, chips, cracks, damaged, stained or slightly crooked front teeth. They are traditionally made from porcelain that is carefully layered to give opaque and translucent areas which reflect light to give a bright and natural finish.
Each case is looked at individually and your specific requirements are taken into account. We decide together which parts of your natural smile you dont like and discuss possible ways to improve things. We design how your teeth will look and prescirbe this to one of our labs. We can do a mock of how your smile will look before you have your teeth prepared so you can make any other small alterations before we get the final veneers made. We use only the very best materials and labs to give the most aesthetic and natural finishes available.
Once we have decided how we want your smile to look the procedure is simple. At the preparation appointment, a thin layer of enamel (around 0.5mm) is buffed off the surface to allow a strong bond to be formed between your underlying tooth and the new veneer. This is a procedure is painless but sometimes takes quite a while since we want to ensure that every margin is as perfect as possible to give you the best possible finish. Because this appointment takes quite a long time often patients opt to have sedation to allow them to fully relax. If you are interested in this dont hesitate to ask. At the end of this appointment, we take moulds which are sent off to the lab to make your new veneers. We then place temporary veneers over your teeth which will look very natural and allow you to get used to the new shape of your veneers.
Your veneers will take around 2-3 weeks to be made up at which point you will come back and if you are happy with the shape and shade of the permanent veneers we can go ahead and cement them permanently. They are held in place by a strong glue-like resin.
After your veneers are cemented, you need to take care of them as you would your natural teeth. You need to brush and floss around them daily to make sure everything stays healthy.
It is common for new veneers to feel a little unusual in your mouth when they are first cemented however in a couple of weeks it will feel like part of your normal dentition and your function will not be affected at all.
Porcelain veneers are just one option we offer to restore damaged, chipped or misaligned teeth. We need to look at each case individually and it may be that you are more suited to having our six month smile procedure, crowns, bleaching or composite build ups. If you have any questions on any cosmetic procedure or are interested in trying to improve the appearance of your smile just pick up the phone and we will be glad to try and help.
